School has officially begun in our house! I can't believe I have a 1st Grader and a Preschooler! Time goes way WAY too fast!!! I feel like our summer break just started, and yet here we are...

Because the first day is always a day worth celebrating, we started it off right with a fun breakfast. Sam picked pancakes with strawberries + whipped cream -- can't argue with that!

Caleb was still asleep or else he would've been in the photo, too.

After enjoying the special breakfast, we got dressed and headed out to take the obligatory First Day Of School photo...

I couldn't help but have the hubs take a photo of us as well. I'm always so terrible at getting myself in the photos, but am trying to make more of an effort...

This also happened to be around the time that the solar eclipse occurred. Because I was still a little paranoid about safety, I didn't buy the approved glasses. However, we did make the cereal box viewer. Sam was pretty amazed! He's already in love with astronomy, so this was the highlight of his day!

Fast forward an hour of instruction and our little guy finally woke up. He ate, got dressed and then it was time for his photo. This guy was beyond excited about starting school!

The cutie! It's funny how different they are. When asked if he was ready for school to start, Sam asked if we could wait until after Christmas. Caleb, on the other hand, jumped for joy at the idea of starting school! Ha!

Overall, I'd say it was a successful first day. We struggle a little in the focus department. Sam likes to wander off into la la land on occasion, but for the most part it went well. If you happened to have watched my video about our 1st Grade Curriculum Choices (See here), you know that I grabbed a TON of stuff! Seriously, a ridiculous amount of stuff to cover for the year -- there's just too many options to choose from! Well, I never really had a chance to sit down and plan anything out. I thought I would have, but life got busy. We had a last minute vacation among other things and I never got a chance. So today happened and I'm now realizing that I'm going to have to tone it back a bit -- or figure out a way to split it up. I'm not sure I'm sold on a few choices that we made with curriculum, but I'll hold off on stating what those are just yet. I want to give it a week or two, then decide. I'll definitely be back with a review once we get moving. There are a few things that, even though they're generally homeschool favorites, they may not be the best for our family. We'll see. Either way, I've got my work cut out for me! And Sam...he's definitely got his work cut out for him! Ha! ;) I'm really looking forward to the year ahead and all that we can explore in the process!

Here are a couple photos from this afternoon. I had originally bought a medium-sized magnetic board at Aldi (see here) that I had planned on using for our All About Reading and All About Spelling lessons. Sure enough, laziness hit and I think we may do a hybrid version. I just can't help it. All those magnets are annoying to deal with all the time. I know...total slacker. So, I found a happy medium...at least for now. I put magnets on the back of the rule tiles and then plan to write the letters in a color-coded fashion on an even smaller board. I found this small magnetic board for a DOLLAR and it can easily store in Sam's desk, so I like that even more! It worked out well for us today. We'll see how long it lasts...

This is unrelated, but made me laugh. Later in the day, while Sam was working on a solar eclipse printable, the hubs came in and it turned into a little break. Ha. Shirtless boys in this house are pretty much the norm...

All the while, Caleb was working hard on his Letter A worksheet. The cute guy was SO excited to do school!

Yep...shirtless...

Lastly, look how pitiful this guy is! We put paint on his hands to do this (FREE) First Day Of Preschool printable craft and he was less than thrilled. Poor guy!

That's a little hint into our first day. It will be fun to see how things progress over time! For those that have started already, how was your first day?
